What's the goal of your internship cover letter? That is what students need to think about before they wit down on their computers and start ting. Again (because it is important), what is the goal of your internship cover letter? There should be one of two goals for the cover letter.
Goal #1 - don't make an impact. This is for the group of students that have an excellent resume or know a guy. These students just need to "no mess up" their internship cover letters. It is not about impressing the HR reader it is all about not letting them down. I would do this if your resume is perfect of your dad knows somebody who knows somebody.
Goal #2 - make an impact. This is for the group of students that can't get across what they can bring to the table in the form of a one page resume. They need an outlet to explain, this is who I am and what I can do. For this group of people, it makes absolutely no sense to not take a huge risk. Because, if you come across as normal, you will not get the job - the goal #1 group will.
This is difficult to understand because students will argue, every internship cover letter should be awesome! No, it shouldn't be awesome unless awesome is what gets you to your goal - the interview. Students need to understand this. The cover letter is nothing more than a tool to achieve a goal. Without a strategy and understanding the internship cover letter is a pointless exercise. Seriously.
So, before you sit down at some trendy starbucks to write a fancy internship cover letter, think about what you would like to accomplish. Also, learn more about how to write an internship resume that HR people will love!
